About The Artist:Considered one of the greatest American painters of the 19th century, Winslow Homer was largely self-taught, and began his career working as a commercial illustrator. Born in Boston, his work often depicts man’s relationship to and struggles with the sea. Children at play or simply lost in thought were also common subjects of his art. The success of his watercolors eventually enabled him to give up freelance illustrating, and he continued his painting career, mostly in solitude, in a small seaside village in Maine until his death in 1910.
