About The Artist: One of the most influential of the American Impressionists, William Merritt Chase studied at the National Academy of Design in New York and furthered his education in Paris at the cole des Beaux-Arts. Chase was also an influential teacher, he established his own summer school at Shinnecock, on the eastern tip of Long Island, New York (which later became part of the Parsons School of Design). Attracted to the low-lying dunes and beaches, Chase and his students were among the first American artists to pursue open-air painting. He is known for his vibrant still lifes, landscapes, and portraits, characterized by their lively brushwork and rich color.
